The Gig

A man dancing in a harbour area. Scene from The Gig.

Story

The Gig is a portrait of compassion. For some it brings fear and rejection, for others it goes without saying. Sometimes the person closest to you is further away than a stranger far away.

Doctor Maria is trying to bring to Finland six Syrian women she rescued in Beirut. The women are relatives of Maria’s ex-husband. The rescue operation keeps growing when Maria realises there are far more people to save than she thought. Help comes from unexpected quarters: her brother Nikke (Robin Svartström), a National Ballet dancer about to retire, and drummer Stenkka Stenvall (Juha Kukkonen) with his band join her in a seemingly impossible task.

What first looks like a separate story follows the drummer’s personal tragedy, in which the collapse of his hearing makes him dependent on the people around him. Little by little the links between the characters are revealed, and in the end pulling together is the key to success.
